The Emotional Christian

img_7760-1

This is The Deposition by Caravaggio. As a Middle Ages artist, he knew the value of bringing an illiterate populace face to face with their crucified savior. The imagery is meant to evoke emotion. To make us feel the pain of loss of son, brother, friend, teacher, leader, messiah. After having lived a short 33+ year life and pouring himself into 12 men, among other followers present, he was wrongfully judged, painfully killed, miraculously resurrected and satisfyingly ascended to heaven. There is much to be emotional about when it comes to Jesus. And as a believer, we must not forget the role that emotions can play in connecting us to our faith. They don’t create our faith, but lovingly and gently massage it into a real relationship and not just a black and white knowledge of facts and theology.
